3d Printing - A new era of home construction?
New technologies such as 3D Printing have been saturating the construction industry with opportunities to change their building process. Using a similar method as small plastic printers, the process can be scaled to create designs for houses and perhaps even space satellites!
According to DigitalTrends.com a builder in Europe is using a “32 x 32 foot” system to construct an entire Two-Story home on location.
“The material’s compressive strength is three times greater than that of the conventional quick build brick,” Marijke Aerts, the project manager, told New Atlas. “Besides the fibers in the concrete, the amount of wire-mesh reinforcement used is extremely limited. As a result of the printing technology used, formwork was redundant, saving an estimated sixty percent on material, time, and budget.”
This type of construction framework could ease the housing crisis across the globe and allow for a new market of more customizable consumer influenced designs when accompanied with an innovative process such as design standardized digital design interface, certified contractor build teams, and supply chain logistics. Society may get a cheaper and faster way to build houses. With personal flight taking off, in the future we may become like a luxurious honey comb of carpenter bees with our own personal or designer customized environments. The 3D planning ability may create new innovative design features and widen the spectrum of creativity.
Project manager at Kamp C, told Digital Trends. “It shows the construction industry the accessibility and potential of this technique.” Learn more here.
